11 ways to enhance your brain activity

Who doesn’t want a sharp mind along with a flash memory? Our brains, just like our muscles need to be trained. Scientists have proven that you can train your mind even at an old age because the brain develops new neural pathways, transforms the old and adapts to change. We use only around 10 per cent of our brain’s potential and that even, not to full extent. There are several ways to boost your brain performance. You can increase information processing speed, improve multitasking and enhance the overall brainwork by training your brain; the more you train it, the sharper your mind becomes. Boost your memory and maximize your brain power by incorporating these exercises into your daily life.
It is scientifically proven that people who have a habit of daily reading, have a sharp mind even at an old age. Scrolling down your Facebook newsfeed does not qualify as reading. Improve your vocabulary with new words and phrases by reading books, magazines and newspapers. Opt for scholarly articles or classic literature; studies have proven that reading and building your vocabulary enhances your memory in several ways.
When your heart is moving, more blood is being transported to all your organs including the brain. With blood, the brain receives more oxygen and nutrients making it work more effectively. Aerobic exercises like running, dancing, swimming and brisk walking reduce stress hormones, spike helpful brain chemicals and boost the development of new neuronal connections in the brain.
You don’t have to be an artist to paint, draw or create something – the main aim is self-expression. When you’re doing something creative, special neural pathways that answer for non-verbal communication are in effect – this sufficiently improves your brain activity. If you need to memorize something, the best time is to do it is right before you sleep. During sleep the brain stores and organizes information more efficiently. When you wake up, you have better chances at retrieving everything you’ve learnt the night before. If you have a long day tomorrow, revise the seven most important tasks before you sleep; the next day you’ll know in which order to perform them because your brain will organize the data for you. The average 6-8 hours of sleep every night are essential for healthy brain activity. When you wake up, have a cup of coffee or at least smell some of it for instant brain stimulation; it’s scientifically proven to wake-up your brain faster.
Forget the calculator
Calculate simple problems the old fashioned way – in your head. Next time you have to calculate the bill at the restaurant, don’t reach for your phone calculator; crunch the numbers in your head instead. At first, it will be a bit difficult, but then you’ll eventually get used to it. Doing simple math in your head is a great way to exercise your brain.
Munch on nuts and blueberries
Magnesium found in nuts promotes brain cell connection and improves long-term and short-term memory. Snack on cashews and almonds during breaks to keep your mind sharp. Blueberries prevent memory loss and promote neuron communication, so to stay in your right mind, add blueberries to your daily menu. The antioxidants found in blueberries are also beneficial for your skin.
Memorizing is a good practice for effective long-term memory. Start with your grocery list and song lyrics, and continue to poems and favourite parts of your books. It is one of the best ways to enhance your memory and brain activity. Make it into a habit and memorizing will have a tremendous effect on your brain power. The more you memorize, the easier it gets to remember things.
To increase your concentration skills, practice multitasking. By processing several different actions simultaneously, your brain is forced to focus more than usual. To keep your brain busy, why not study a foreign language? Bilingual people are better multitaskers and have a better memory. Break the routine
If each day you follow the same routine, your brain is mostly on auto-pilot mode. A lifestyle where you don’t challenge your brain, don’t meet new people and discover new places, is a fine way to degradation. Your brain needs to acquire new information and be challenged. Instead of the GPS use an old-fashioned map, take a new route home and do crosswords during breakfast or play cards with your friends – all these activities stimulate your brain to think and develop new neuropathways.
